Leaving the reduced reality: with the FlyingLab to SXSW

SXSW

„Keep Austin weird“ – a slogan you will hear on repeat after arriving at the South by Southwest (SXSW) festival in Austin. It is one of the biggest festivals worldwide where film, music and interactive industries converge into a giant creative mixing pot. Augmented, Mixed and Virtual Reality are gaining momentum and fast becoming an influential part of the interactive panel. As part of the Lufthansa FlyingLab I was on location in Austin to collect some impressions for you. […]

Reality Report #2: Augmented, Mixed and Virtual Reality

Reality Report

It’s great to see how many new things are popping up in Augmented, Mixed and Virtual Reality. The hardware suppliers are in full preparation for major events such as Mobile World Congress, GDC, SXSW and many more where Augmented, Mixed and Virtual Reality are important parts of the show. Magic Leap are struggling to stay out of the headlines after some images were leaked out of their February board meeting. The HTC vs Oculus battle lines have been extended to include the race for mobile VR headsets. And it seems like Hollywood is verging into Silicon Valley territory… in the last years Silicon Valley was „the spot“ for AR and VR, but now we are seeing the rapid growth of Los Angeles being driven by the film studios in Hollywood. Enjoy reading the Reality Report! […]

Microsoft Hololens: Next Augmented Reality Game Changer in 2019

Hololens

A post on Thurott.com reports that Microsoft is skipping the second version of the Hololens and we won’t see the next generation before 2019. There can be several reasons for this – but the most likely is that Microsoft realised there will be no competitor with a comparable device this year or the next. Either way, it seems that Microsoft has taken the lead with a great start in the Mixed Reality race with Magic Leap and Meta close at the heels. But don’t forget the dark horse in this race… Apple. Magic Leap: delivering AR glasses in 2017

This could be be a big milestone for Magic Leap: The engineers of the Florida-based startup, with a whopping $4.5 billion in funding, are working on a prototype of their Augmented Reality glasses and will be presented to the board members in February. Could this be a reaction to the December article from The Information? Or was it already planned in Magic Leap’s development? Either way, it seems like there is something going on in Fort Lauderdale in 2017… and the mankind is expecting a giant leap. […]

Reality Report: Augmented, Mixed, Virtual

Reality Report

January has been a busy month for AR & VR – especially with all the news from CES in Las Vegas. Samsung has announced that they are working on AR glasses, many rumors are coming up about Apples’s activities in AR and Facebook announced a Vice President for Virtual Reality. Last week I had the chance to test the brand new R8 and R9 glasses from ODG, also the Daydream View I had a deeper look on (more details about that soon here). What I find very interesting is how Snap deals with AR: they acquired an AR startup and I am sure that we will see more AR on the Spectacles soon. Enjoy reading the Reality Report…there is so much to tell. […]

How Augmented Reality drives the Internet of Things

It is a pretty familiar scene, that of the classic morning routine of the future. A person wakes up, gets out of bed, and walks over to their window. As they gaze out at their city skyline, a hologram hovering somewhere in the sky informs them of the weather. Other floating projections display the morning news, their itinerary for the day, and whatever else may be relevant to that person at that time. […]
